纽约百老汇，戏剧导演Oscar Jaffe（约翰·巴里摩尔 John Barrymore 饰）捧红了女演员Lily Garland（卡洛·朗白 Carole Lombard 饰），两人成为百老汇票房保证，同时也是一对情侣。合作三年后，Lily因为受不了Oscar对她私人生活的过度干预，偷偷跑去了好莱坞演电影。Oscar一怒之下起用了新的女演员，可惜票房很差，还在芝加哥欠下了债。在从芝加哥回纽约的二十世纪列车上，Oscar机缘巧合又和Lily在同一列火车上。Oscar试图挽回Lily，不管是爱情还是演戏，但Lily已经有了另外的恋人，也对重新和Oscar合作不感兴趣。这列火车上碰巧有一位脑子不大好使的大富翁，Oscar利用这个富翁给他开了张支票，试图以这张支票来让Lily签了演戏的合约。然而这位所谓“大富翁”原来不过是个精神病人，Oscar手中的支票毫...。随着科技的进步和发展，一种能让犯罪之人“改邪归正”的新型药物被研发了出来，一位名叫李（雷·利奥塔 Ray Liotta 饰）的死刑犯作为试验品接受了药物的注射，通过实验数据的监测，科学家们发现除了暴力倾向的逐渐消除外，李的内心里还对受害者盖瑞（Mark Pickard 饰）产生了愧疚之情，这也就意味着，李已经逐渐的转变成为了所谓的“好人”。实验组让李重新回归了社会，并进行着持续的监控。 随着时间的推移，李的生活渐渐走上了正轨，他不仅努力工作，还交了一位漂亮的女友。心中的愧疚让李打起了看望盖瑞的念头，然而，盖瑞的哥哥比尔（蒂姆·迪凯 Tim DeKay 饰）却不愿意原谅李，他不仅绑架了李，还打死了监控李的工作人员。工作人员的死亡让警方误以为李“本性难移”，一边是步步紧逼的追捕，一边是凶神恶煞的绑匪，腹背受敌的李会遭遇怎样的险情呢？。Greece, in the 1920's, is occupied by the Turks. The country is in turmoil with entire villages uprooted. The site of the movie is a Greek village that conducts a passion play each year. The leading citizens of the town, under the auspices of the Patriarch, choose those that will play the parts in the Passion. A stuttering shepherd is chosen to play Jesus. The town butcher (who wanted to be Jesus) is chosen as Judas. The town prostitute is chosen as Mary Magdalene. The rest of the disciples are also chosen. As the movie unfolds, the Passion Play becomes a reality. A group of villagers, uprooted by the war and impoverished, arrive at the village led by their priest. The wealthier citizens of the town want nothing with these people and manipulate a massacre. In the context of the 1920's each of the characters plays out their biblical role in actuality.。
