六十年代的香港，范根中医馆在街坊里十分有名，因为范根医德十分高尚，不管有钱没钱，街坊街里能帮就帮。儿子范守望（吴镇宇 饰）亦深得老爸真传，为人十分侠义。一次，好友欠下黑社会巨债，守望为了救兄弟独自一人前往正在发生政变的越南帮助黑帮头子把他在越南的女儿接回了香港。守望的胆识和精明，深得的黑帮头子的女人赏识。随后，守望觉得广州的发展是个好机会，于是和她一起投资在广州搞荔枝园。经常来往广州，守望结识了当地的一个怪人——白活（黄子华 饰）。白活自小就是孤儿，被村里的人捡回来，由于自小无依无靠，白活十分看重友谊，只要是好朋友的忙，赴汤蹈火在所不辞。白活天生记忆力过人，是个数学天才，和守望成为好友后，和他一起来港打天下，两人自信能闯出一片自己的天空。。A private detective helps a prostitute being assaulted, and notices that she is wearing a very unique ring.
